Secondary learning model change in September

Thames Valley secondary schools, and secondary remote learners in virtual programs, will follow a Modified Semester Model in September 2021 – instead of the Quadmester Model used during the current school year.

“The Modified Semester Model addresses student and family concerns about the pace and intensity of courses experienced in the Quadmester Model during the current school year,” said Mark Fisher, Director of Education. 

“We believe the Modified Semester Model is more supportive of student learning,” said Director Fisher, adding: “The decision was made in light of increasing vaccination rates and in consultation with local public health units.”

Under the Modified Semester Model, students will take a total of four courses over each 20-week semester – alternating two courses one week, then two other courses for the next week. 

Students will attend school 150 minutes each morning, followed by a lunch break, before returning for 150 minutes in the afternoon. (See sample schedule below.) Families are encouraged to refer to the school’s website for the start and end times of the school day as these times will be different at each school. Breaks will be built into each 150-minute learning block. The lunch break will occur between each period.  

This model will be followed by students whether they are attending school In-Person or Full Remote Learning.
